Holy Communion Sermon outlines

"The Table of Grace: Understanding Holy Communion"

Introduction:

Welcome and express gratitude for coming together to partake in this sacred act.
Explain that Holy Communion, also known as the Lord's Supper or Eucharist, is a special time of remembrance and spiritual nourishment for believers.

I. The Meaning of Holy Communion

A.Remembrance of Christ's Sacrifice - Holy Communion is a symbolic act of remembering Jesus' sacrificial death on the cross for our sins. - Reference 1 Corinthians 11:24-25 - "This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me... This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me."

B. Proclamation of His Death and Resurrection - As we partake in the elements, we proclaim the central message of the Gospel: Christ's death, burial, and resurrection. - Reference 1 Corinthians 11:26 - "For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes."

II. The Power of Communion

A. Spiritual Nourishment - Holy Communion is not just a ritual; it is a time of spiritual feeding and sustenance for our souls. - Reference John 6:53-54 - "Jesus said to them, 'Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life...'"

B. Unity in the Body of Christ - Through partaking together, we acknowledge our unity as the body of Christ, members of His family. - Reference 1 Corinthians 10:17 - "Because there is one loaf, we, who are many, are one body, for we all share the one loaf."

III. The Preparation for Communion

A. Self-Examination and Repentance - Before partaking, we should examine our hearts, confessing and repenting of any known sin. - Reference 1 Corinthians 11:28 - "Everyone ought to examine themselves before they eat of the bread and drink from the cup."

B. Forgiveness and Reconciliation - Encourage forgiveness and reconciliation among believers, seeking unity and love within the body of Christ. - Reference Matthew 5:23-24 - "Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift."

IV. The Promise of Communion

A. Spiritual Renewal and Strength - Holy Communion is a time of spiritual renewal, receiving grace and strength for our journey with Christ. - Reference Isaiah 40:31 - "But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint."

B. Anticipation of Christ's Return - As we participate in Communion, we anticipate the glorious return of our Lord Jesus Christ. - Reference 1 Corinthians 11:26 - "For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes."

Conclusion: Emphasize the sacredness of Holy Communion and the depth of Christ's love demonstrated through His sacrifice.

Invite the congregation to approach the table with reverence and gratitude.

Conclude with a prayer of thanksgiving, seeking God's continued grace and guidance in our lives as we follow Jesus' example.
